Leon Nsiku is an experienced program manager with more than ten years in humanitarian programming, resource mobilization, human rights, democracy and governance in the East and Horn of Africa, Central Africa and Sahel regions.
Leon Nsiku worked on a regional and multi-stakeholder human rights defenders' empowerment program in Uganda for eight years before joining the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Partnership building; Monitoring , Evaluation and Learning; Program Development ; Research; Project and Program Management cut across Leon's current and previous experience.
Leon Nsiku holds two Master's degrees in Security Studies and Political Science respectively. He conducted research on the development role of peacekeeping missions in the DRC, on the one side, and the impact of refugee influx on human security in host communities in Uganda. Another research area of interest to Leon Nsiku is Environmental Security, in which he has been pursuing a PhD under Security Studies .
Leon Nsiku conducted successful consultancies in areas of resource mobilization, safety and security management for humanitarian and human rights organizations and countering digital threats to development.
• Overseeing DRG projects including planning, designing, organizing, monitoring implementation, coordinating, and monitoring for results.
• Conducting extensive local consultations and triangulating data to inform programming.
• Leading the preparation of required design documents, directives, memoranda, statements, and proposals.
• Introducing new initiatives and recommending effective operations consistent with the USAID’s policies/ DRG strategies and incorporating human rights and governance principles and practices across USAID’s development portfolio.
• Working closely with host-government ministry officials, institutions, and international and NGOs to coordinate DRG efforts, raise awareness among DRC citizenry and civil society organizations on DRG issues, and provide technical assistance.
• Serving as an advisor on DRG matters to other USAID technical offices to integrate participation, inclusion, transparency, accountability, and country ownership throughout USAID’s portfolio, including in education, health, economic growth, environment, peace and security, for more responsive governance, local capacity building, and sustainable development.
• Providing analysis on the political economy within DRC to inform activity design and implementation.
• Performing regular site visits and meeting with representatives of each organization and the beneficiaries to review progress.
